I’m a freelance writer and columnist, and regularly write about angels and the guardian angel phenomena. I receive hundreds of letters from people describing their angel experiences. Angels seem to reach people from all over the world and cross all religious boundaries.

Doris wrote and told me about the day she went to pick up her daughter after a very serious accident. She was amazed to find the car was completely concertinaed – her daughter and friend had to be cut out of the car, yet they received nothing but bruises for injuries. Doris says that she knows her daughter was saved by angels that day.

Fiona wrote to share her ‘near miss’ story:
“I remember clearly an incident where I was riding along on my bike when I had a ferocious itch on my nose. I lifted my visor to scratch the itch and obviously slowed down in the process. Up ahead, about where I would have been if I had not slowed down, a car swerved across into the outside lane and smashed into a car coming up behind. As it was all I had to do was brake hard to miss it, but if I hadn't got that itch on my nose ... I often think about that incident and wonder if someone was looking down on me!”

Any of these stories can be open to interpretation you may say, but some of the stories that people involve them actually seeing an angel. Julia for example saw a ‘being of light’ sitting on the edge of her sons bed, as if ‘protecting his whilst he slept’.

A favourite story of mine came from America. After phoning for an ambulance at a roadside crash, Joel prayed for an angel to safely escort the injured driver to the hospital. Several miles down the road, the ambulance overtook him at high speed. Joel clearly saw an angel flying over the top of the ambulance.

Millions of people believe in angels around the world today. My research seems to show more than a higher probability that we have our own spiritual guardians, our own ‘Guardian Angels’ – my work depends on it! A comforting thought!

Frequently Asked Angel Questions

Q. What is an angel?

A short question with a long answer but I will try to be brief.  Angels were created before man by our creator or God essence.  The role of angels is varied but many angels have been created specifically with the purpose of looking after God’s children – us.

“An angel is a spiritual being created by God, without a body, for the service of Christendom and the Church.”

Martin Luther (Table Talk)

Q. How can an angel help me?

Angels do not have a full understanding of what it is to be human, so they do not always understand our problems totally.  Angels are good at placing the right people into our path when we need them (set up as a useful ‘co-incidence’ for the purpose of guidance and moving us forward with our pre-birth life plans), and specifically at sending us loving energy and support.

Angels do have speciality roles and we can call upon a specific angel to help with certain tasks (see the Angel Almanac for a detailed lists).

Q. If we have angels around us, why is it that thing’s go wrong in our lives?

As spirit we move into a human body to work through lessons and goals that we set for ourselves before birth.  (We pre-plan skills that we need to practice.)  Angels as such are not allowed to interfere with this plan (or they would be meddling with our curriculum.)

Sometimes these lessons are much harder than we ever imagined they might be and this is where an angel can help.  They can ease a difficult situation and help us through the pain.  They can bring along sympathetic people to help us achieve our goals and support us in times of difficulty.  There is one important proviso; we have to ask our angels for their assistance.  They need our permission to get involved in our lives.  Of course, emergencies are different!

“Angels do find us in our hour of need.”

Amy Huffman

Q. Is it true that we all have our own guardian angel with us all the time?

It is my understanding that we all have spiritual guides with us all (well most) of the time.  Our guides act as teachers and friends on the other side but with the knowledge and experience of being human that angels do not possess.

“For every soul, there is a guardian watching it.”

The Koran

Q. What do angels look like?

Angels often appear in a way in which we expect to see them.  Some people see angels as sparks or clouds of light or energy; some people see a traditional ‘Christmas Card’ angel complete with wings and halos and yet others see them more in human form.  They can appear as very small figures or very large, tall and imposing visions – with their heads through the ceiling and their ‘feet’ through the floor!

Usually visitations appear either in ones ‘minds eye’ or just with a ‘knowing that they are there.’  Angels can be sensed and also heard as well as seen.

Q. Are angels male or female?

Angels are actually androgynous (having no sex), but are sometimes shown, or show themselves, as male or female (to indicate traditional masculine or feminine tendencies such as gentleness or strength).  The Bible for example shows Gabriel to be a female but the Moslems recognise a male Gabriel, ‘Gibril,’ (who dictated the Koran to the prophet Mohammed.)

Increasingly, I believe that this is unnecessary and angels will more and more show themselves with no sex.  As we humankind soften and merge the lines between the sexes, so the angels will take their clue from us.

Q. Do all angels have names?

No, and they do not recognise the need for names at all.  Angels are distinguished for their abilities and roles and really it is only the human need to name things which is how they have attracted names as we know and understand them.

“Angels are spirits, but it is not because they are spirits that they are angels.

They become angels when they are sent, for the name angel refers to their office, not their nature.  You may ask the name of this nature, it is spirit; you ask its office, it is that of an angel, which is a messenger.”

Saint Augustine

Q. How do I find out the name of my angel?

Angels have no problem with us using names however and are just happy to be utilised and noticed.  We can call our angels anything at all – whatever feels right for us.  If you prefer, you can ask for a name in meditation or just before going to sleep at night.  Take the first name that comes to you if it feels right.

Guardian Angels – the celebrities favourite…

No longer do people do people talk in whispered tones about believing in angels.  In fact if you don’t believe in angels then you’re just not in touch!  Seriously though, working with your angels is so big now that even pop stars and TV celebrities are confessing to chatting to their own spiritual guardians.

Singer Robbie Williams popularity grew immensely following the huge success of his hit ‘Angels’.  One woman was quoted as saying, ‘…anyone who could write a song like Angels can’t be that bad a person!

Celebrities are even going so far as to have them tattooed on their bodies.  Charlie’s Angels star Drew Barrymore has angels tattooed on her back; Film actress Geena Davis has a cherub on her ankle (although admittedly a cover-up of ex-husband Renny Harlin's name); Model and hotel heiress Nicky Hilton has a heart with ‘wings’ tattooed on the inside of her right wrist; Soap actress Patsy Kensit also has an angel on her back, and singer Beyonce Knowles has an image of a praying angel tattooed in an er ‘intimate location’.

Most of us take the belief in angels a little more seriously though.  Many people in life threatening situations have suggested that their angels might be the real reason they survived.

Anna’s story is typical.  “I’ve had a couple of experiences for which I can find no other explanation other than the fact that I was protected in some way. I like to think they were angels.  Both occurred while I was driving, which (to my knowledge anyway!) are the only times I have been in real danger.

The first occasion was fourteen years ago when a vehicle which was coming in the opposite direction came over the brow of a hill on the wrong side of the road.  He hit my car, which then overturned twice before landing upside down in a ditch. I had two passengers and my dog in the car as well. As the car overturned, I felt as if I was 'wrapped up’ in something warm and completely protected from what was happening.

All of us, including my dog, walked out of that accident without injury. The other driver careered off the road into a tree stump…but also walked away uninjured. Both cars were a complete write-off.  I often look at the photos of the car and marvel that we all walked away.

The second occasion was even more miraculous. I was driving along the city bypass in the outside lane and could see that the traffic was coming to a halt in both lanes ahead of me. The inside lane was stationery as I stopped in the outside lane. I looked into my rear view mirror and saw a car coming up very fast behind me.  He seemed to be driving very erratically.

At this point, 'someone else' took control of the car, and I can only believe it was my guardian angel.  There was nowhere for me to escape to.  The inside lane was solid with traffic.  There were no gaps for me to slot into and to my side was an oil tanker.

In a split second, the steering wheel was turned sharply to the left for me and a gap appeared on the inside lane between the tanker and the car in front of it. Before I knew what had happened, I was safely in this gap. It all happened so quickly, and there was no way I could have thought about what to do and completed the manoeuvre in such a short time. It was definitely done for me.

I know my angels helped me to avoid a serious accident that day.”

Do you believe in guardian angels?  You’re in good company!
