A BRIEF HISTORY OF DREAM INTERPRETATION
Dream interpretation began 3000 to 4000 BC, where they were documented onto clay tablets.
The path of interpretations leads back to the ancient Egyptians, where the first written record of dream interpretation dates back to 1350 BC. This document was called the Chester Beatty papyrus, and is the oldest dream book in existence. It gave images and interpretations for what they believed the dreams meant.
Dreams were so important to the Egyptians that they had dream interpreters, and special temple priest who were known as the “Masters of the secret things.” Who believed that dreams were warnings advice and prophecy.
The way they distinguished the interpretations was very much like a play on words. For example, the Egyptian word for buttocks is similar to the word orphan therefore to dream of naked buttocks meant the death of a parent.
We can see how this is not relevant today. As our words today are of different meanings.
Incubation influenced the Egyptians, and it is believed that this practice first came from the ancient Mesopotamians
Used to describe a number of practices before the person went to sleep, it was used to help people dream of particular topics. As well as helping them attempt to contact divine beings. This reflects today’s practice of lucid dreaming.
In the Greek and Roman era dream interpreters escorted generals into battle. Where dreams were divided into true and false dreams. One of the ways they did this was that if the dream took place near or under ivory gates then they were false, but if they were horn gates then they were true. Which is not a very accurate way to distinguish the truth in dreams.
Dream interpretation is very different today, where eating heavy meals just before bedtime, stresses and actions of the day, our fears and our hopes can cause some dreams especially nightmares. When all this has been ruled out then that is where dreams can be interpreted. Dreams can be very cryptic or very clear to understand.
Every person is different, that is why looking up dream symbols is not always an accurate interpretation.
I have been interpreting dreams since I was 10 years old. So, if anyone has a dream that they would like interpreted, please e-mail me: @ webmaster@mediumysticss.com
